2022 Season Report

The Wayfarers section of Pontypool Golf Club once again under the captaincy of our Club Captain, Mike Price, enjoyed a highly successful 2022 season, the highlight of which was winning the Wayfarers Knock Out Cup,which is called The Brian Harding Memorial Cup, defeating our league winning opponents Maesteg in the final.

In previous rounds we had halved at Cradoc going through as the away team, then followed wins against strong opposition , namely Bargoed from our league, then Aberdare and Pyle & Kenfig, it was in these games, we made the most of our home advantage.

Then on to the semi final played at Coed Y Mwster, which was also against another of our league opponents and fierce local rivals , Pontnewydd, whom we managed to beat 3 to 2, with a superb performance against a very strong Pontnewydd team.

On to the final where we faced Maesteg who won our league , the final played at the Monmouthshire Golf Club on Sunday 25th September , It was a hard fought encounter with 3 of the matches being finished on the 18th hole. The final result was a resounding 3 and a half to a 1 and a half victory. The team was well supported by a hardy band of fellow members, whom the team thanks for their support.

In the league we did well to finish in 3rd place , 8 points behind the league A winners Maesteg , at least they had the consolation of the winning our league after losing the cup final. We had to do some hard miles when travelling in the league this season , Maesteg to the West and Forest Hills to the East , along with visits to Bargoed , Celtic Manor, Woodlake Park and Pontnewydd, the latter 3 made up for the other longer drives.

At home we won 3 games and halved 2 and lost to the league winners.

Away from home we lost 4 , won at Pontnewydd and halved at the league winners.

We used 23 players during the course of the season and as a result never had to concede a point for not fielding a full team. Many thanks to every one of those 23 players , it is definitely a squad that we have and can call on when needed and not just 10 who play in that particular game. Out of those 23 players 7 played less than 5 games. Once again we thank everyone of the 23 for their contributions to this years success and you should be proud to be a Pontypool Wayfarer ,whether you played 1 or 18 games this season.

Our thanks also to David Harris, our team shirt sponsor of G & L Services.

Thanks also to Leon our most professional, PGA professional and also to Paul and Judith and their team upstairs for keeping us well fed and watered all season.

Finally to our Head Green Keeper David and his team , many , many thanks for the wonderful condition of the course throughout the season , very well done.

We look forward to hopefully another successful season next year , we are awaiting final confirmation of which teams will be in our league in the forthcoming season. Please see the Wayfarers notice for more information on this later in the year.

We would welcome any new players or past Wayfarers wanting to play in the 2023 season. Players must have a handicap of 8.5 and above. Please feel free to contact Mike Price or Leon if you are interested and he point you in the right direction.
